The Pro Bono Program links people with low incomes with volunteer attorneys who provide representation at no charge. Pro Bono attorneys only handle civil (non-criminal) cases. The types of legal accepted include: custody, divorce, bankruptcy, debt collection, landlord-tenant matters and other non-fee-generating matters. To receive help through Pro Bono, call the Legal Advice & Referral Center (LARC) at 800-639-5290 or 603-224-3333 or visit their website. The Bar Association also hosts Lawline, where volunteer attorneys are available to answer your legal questions. Lawline is held on the SECOND Wednesdays of each month from 6–8 p.m. To reach Lawline, call the NH Bar Association (toll free) at 800-868-1212. Another project of the Bar is the Low-Income Taxpayer Project, which offers free legal aid to many low-income, New Hampshire residents who have controversies with the IRS. If your income is less than 250% of the federal poverty guidelines, you may qualify for this program. For the Low-Income Taxpayer Project, call 603-228-6028. The Domestic Violence Emergency (DOVE) Project provides victims of violence and stalking with emergency legal services. The DOVE Project provides free legal representation to qualifying clients at final Domestic Violence and Stalking Restraining Order hearings. To be represented by a volunteer DOVE attorney, you must contact a local New Hampshire domestic violence crisis service agency. Call 1-866-644-3574, available 24 hours a day to be connected with a domestic violence or stalking advocate.
Legal Assistance
Included in this list are organizations that provide free or low-cost legal services to victims of abuse and others who qualify. Even if the organization does not have a lawyer available to represent you in court, you may want to ask if there is a lawyer who you can consult with to get advice. Please note that we list the organizations by the town/city or county where the office is located – however, many offices may likely serve multiple counties. We indicate the “counties served” whenever possible. You can click “View All” to look through the complete list of organizations.

We refer many clients to other programs (we refer many cases to the Pro Bono Program of the New Hampshire Bar Association, New Hampshire Legal Assistance, the Law Clinics at University of New Hampshire School of Law, Disabilities Rights Center, State agencies and independent organizations).
