A restraining order is a legal order issued by a state court which requires one person to stop harming another. In Maryland, there are domestic violence protective orders and peace orders, which are explained below.
Some restraining orders are issued in criminal court and some are issued in civil court.
A civil order that protects you from harm by someone you have a specific relationship with.
If you do not qualify for a domestic violence protective order, but you have been the victim of abuse and need protection, you may be able to get a peace order.
Your MD protection order can be enforceable in another state.
If you are planning to move to MD or are going to be in MD for any reason, your protection or restraining order may be enforced.
